NNPP insists on convention plans despite delay in INEC recognition

The New Nigeria Peoples Party has announced plans to proceed with its congresses and national convention despite delays by the Independent National Electoral Commission in recognising its current leadership.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos, the party’s founder, Boniface Aniebonam, said the decision was necessary to ensure members are not excluded from participating in upcoming electoral processes.

“Our timetable for congresses, primaries and the national convention has already been submitted to INEC. We are moving ahead with these activities and will fully participate in all elective contests, including the 2027 presidential election,” Aniebonam stated.

He expressed concern over what he described as continued delays by the electoral body in acknowledging the National Working Committee led by Agbo Major, despite court rulings in its favour.

“The commission’s failure to implement court decisions, along with prolonged internal disputes, has limited our opportunities to contest elections across the country,” he said. “We cannot continue to deny our members their democratic rights.”

Aniebonam noted that the party would proceed with its internal processes while still engaging the commission on compliance with the court directives.

“We expected INEC to respect the rulings of the court. Unfortunately, that has not happened, and we are seeking clarification from the commission, especially as there is no legal barrier preventing compliance,” he added.

He emphasised that judicial decisions should take precedence over administrative actions, referencing past political cases to support his position.

“Court orders are binding and must be obeyed. They override decisions taken by regulatory bodies or internal party mechanisms,” he said.

The party reiterated its commitment to securing official recognition for its leadership while preparing for the 2027 general elections.
