Army recovers official X account after cyberattack

The Nigerian Army has regained full control of its official X account, @HQNigerianArmy, following an attempted cyberattack that disrupted its management.

The Army announced the development on Sunday, confirming that the account had been restored and returned to its authorised handlers.

In a statement posted on the platform, the military said, “This account is fully restored and back under the official management of the Nigerian Army. We appreciate your patience and understanding.”

The recovery brings to an end a process that began on August 29, 2026, when the Army detected attempts to gain unauthorised access to the account at about 5 pm.

The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, had earlier confirmed the incident, describing it as a cybersecurity breach.

Following the development, the Army said it activated technical and security measures to prevent further unauthorised access and safeguard its official communications.

During the period of restricted access, the military urged members of the public and media organisations to disregard suspicious or unverified information published on the affected account.

It also advised Nigerians to obtain authentic updates through its other verified social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

The incident occurred weeks after a similar cyberattack affected the Defence Headquarters’ X account, @DHQNigeria, which was subsequently recovered within days.
With the restoration, the Nigerian Army has regained access to one of its major communication channels for disseminating information on military operations and other defence-related matters.
