Spanish striker De Miguel dies after fatal goalkeeper collision

Spanish second-division club CD Tenerife has announced the death of its striker, Jesus de Miguel, following a fatal collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a league match.

The 30-year-old sustained serious head and chest injuries in the incident on Monday, which occurred seven minutes into stoppage time when the encounter was tied at 2-2. Owono was subsequently shown a straight red card for the challenge.

De Miguel was initially reported to be in a stable but serious condition after being rushed to hospital.

However, his health deteriorated on Tuesday morning, and he died at 8am local time, according to the club.

In a statement, Tenerife expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the forward, saying, “Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda.”

The club added, “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today.”

It also said the family had requested privacy during the difficult period.

The fatal incident happened when Owono sprinted towards the centre circle to clear a long ball, with his knee appearing to strike De Miguel.

The striker remained motionless on the pitch as medical personnel attended to him before he was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The referee abandoned the match following the incident.

Spanish media, including Marca, reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance but was resuscitated by paramedics.

Tributes have since come from Andorra, former club Castellon, La Liga president Javier Tebas, former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe.

Born in Madrid, De Miguel began his career at Leganes in 2015 and went on to represent eight clubs in Spain.

He joined Castellon in 2023 and scored 16 goals as the team secured promotion to the second division the following year.

He moved to Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year contract, recording 11 goals in 29 appearances.

The striker is survived by his daughter, Carla de Miguel Fernandez, born in 2025.
