Police kill suspected robber in Ogun gun battle

The Ogun State Police Command says it has foiled a suspected robbery operation in the Ijaba area of Iyesi, Ota, killing one suspected gang member and recovering two vehicles, two pistols and other items believed to be stolen.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, after the police received a distress call from a resident about an ongoing robbery.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, explaining that officers from the Onipanu Divisional Police Headquarters mobilised to the scene at about 1:45 am.

According to him, the suspected robbers opened fire on the officers upon sighting them, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

He said, “On sighting the operatives, the armed robbers opened fire, prompting an immediate tactical response. The ensuing exchange of gunfire resulted in the neutralisation of one suspect, while other gang members fled with suspected gunshot injuries.”

Babaseyi said a search of the area led to the recovery of a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry, alongside two pistols and several items suspected to have been stolen.

Other recovered items, according to the police, included mobile phones, a Tecno handset, three passport photographs, an MTN SIM pack, two National Identification Number cards and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The police spokesman added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, particularly those who might have sustained gunshot wounds.

He said investigations had also commenced to establish the rightful owners of the recovered vehicles and other exhibits, as well as determine whether they were connected to other criminal activities.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Bode Ojajuni, praised the officers for their swift response and handling of the operation.

Ojajuni reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and increased patrols to tackle criminal activities across the state.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies, assuring them of the police command’s readiness to protect lives and property.
