Ligue 1: 10-man Lille hold Monaco to 1-1 draw

Monaco were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Lille in the French Ligue 1 on Sunday, with Ethan Mbappé scoring for the visitors before Edan Diop rescued a point for the hosts.

Lille took the lead in the 24th minute when Mbappé finished off a pass from Soriba Diaoune, beating Monaco goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký.

The visitors had to cope with an early setback after Ansu Fati was forced off with a thigh injury in the 14th minute.

Monaco improved after the break, with Aleksandr Golovin testing Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer shortly after the restart.

The hosts increased their attacking pressure, but Paris Brunner and other Monaco players struggled to find the equaliser.

Lille’s task became more difficult in the 66th minute when Tanguy Nianzou was sent off for a heavy challenge on Brunner, leaving the visitors with 10 men for the remainder of the contest.

Monaco capitalised on their numerical advantage eight minutes later as Diop found the net in the 74th minute to level the score at 1-1.

Brunner believed he had made contact with the ball in the build-up to the goal.

Özer then produced a series of crucial saves to preserve Lille’s point, denying Golovin in the 79th minute before stopping efforts from Matthis Abline and Vanderson in stoppage time.

The draw came a week after Monaco suffered a 1-0 defeat to Lorient, leaving them with further work to do as they seek consistency in the league.

Lille, meanwhile, showed resilience to secure a point despite playing with 10 men for the final stages.

Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais could take advantage of the result to move to the top of the Ligue 1 standings when they play on Monday.
