EPL: Coventry thrash Newcastle 4-1 to exit relegation zone

Coventry City secured a memorable 4-1 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday, recording their first home win in the English top flight in 25 years and climbing out of the relegation zone.

Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Hornícek brought down Sidiki Cherif in the box.

The goalkeeper had earlier mishandled a routine ball, allowing Coventry to capitalise on Newcastle’s sluggish start.

Newcastle gradually settled into the contest, with Harvey Barnes testing Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

However, the hosts maintained their advantage despite a late first-half opportunity for Matias Fernandez-Pardo, whose goalbound effort was cleared off the line by Bobby Thomas.

Coventry doubled their lead just three minutes into the second half when Cherif collected the ball following a Newcastle defensive clearance and fired a low shot into the bottom-right corner.

Newcastle reduced the deficit in the 70th minute through Sven Botman, who unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the penalty area beyond Rushworth.

The visitors appeared to have gained momentum, but Coventry restored their two-goal advantage in the 81st minute.

Ellis Simms found the net after Joelinton lost possession outside his own penalty area, with his effort taking a deflection off Malick Thiaw before crossing the line.

Substitute Stephen Mfuni completed the emphatic victory in the 86th minute, scoring shortly after coming off the bench.

Coventry had another opportunity to extend their lead when Brandon Thomas-Asante struck the post.

The result gave Frank Lampard’s side successive victories and their second league win of the season, lifting them out of the relegation zone and level on points with Manchester United.

The victory also marked a historic occasion for Coventry, whose previous Premier League goal at home had come at Highfield Road in April 2001, when John Hartson scored in a 1-0 win over Sunderland.

For Newcastle, the defeat continued their disappointing run in Monday night fixtures, having also suffered a 4-1 loss to Leeds United the previous time they played on that day.
