102-year-old woman dies, 90 rescued in Spain floods

A 102-year-old woman has died while firefighters rescued 90 people after severe flooding in Madrigueras, southeastern Spain, regional authorities said on Saturday.

The flooding occurred after heavy rainfall hit the town on Friday, sending water through streets and leaving cars floating as emergency responders launched a large-scale rescue operation.

Firefighters later found the woman’s body inside her home, where floodwater had risen to more than one metre.

Authorities in the Castilla-La Mancha region said 142 litres of rain per square metre fell in Madrigueras, a town with a population of about 4,760.

Heavy rainfall was also recorded in several parts of southeastern and northeastern Spain on Friday.

The flooding comes after Spain experienced its hottest summer on record, with almost 2,150 people estimated to have died from heat-related causes in August.

The latest incident adds to a series of extreme weather events that have affected parts of Europe in recent months.
