Spain extend World Cup-winning coach De la Fuente’s contract

Spain coach, Luis de la Fuente, is set to remain in charge of the national team until 2032 after agreeing to a contract extension following his successful spell with the side.

The Spanish football federation, RFEF, announced on Monday that the 65-year-old coach would extend his deal to cover the 2028 and 2032 European Championships, as well as the 2030 World Cup.

“Luis de la Fuente will extend his contract through the next two European Championships, in 2028 and 2032, as well as the 2030 World Cup,” the RFEF said in a statement.

De la Fuente took over as Spain coach in 2022, succeeding Luis Enrique, and has since guided the national team to the 2023 UEFA Nations League title, Euro 2024 triumph and World Cup success.

The coach had previously spent 10 years working with Spain’s youth teams before being promoted to the senior national side.

“We’re talking about the most successful head coach in the history of the national team, and after 14 years with us, this is something Luis de la Fuente deserves, a long-term future at the RFEF,” said the chair of the Spanish FA’s board of directors, Rafael Louzan.

Spain will return to action on September 26 when they face England in their first match since winning the World Cup in July.

They will then host Croatia in Seville three days later to begin their Nations League campaign.
