Sokoto ADC gov candidate urges govt to tackle rising insecurity

The African Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Manir Dan’iya, has called on the state and local governments to take urgent steps to address the worsening insecurity affecting several communities.

Dan’iya expressed concern over reports of displacement, attacks on communities and the abduction of women and girls in parts of the state.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Aminu Abdullahi, the ADC candidate also questioned the utilisation of more than one-point-two trillion naira reportedly received by the state and local governments from the Federation Account.

He challenged the authorities to disclose how much of the funds had been allocated to security, humanitarian support and the rehabilitation of communities affected by attacks.

Dan’iya specifically cited the displacement of residents from Girkau, Romon Liman, Romon Sarki, Margai and Masu, with some reportedly seeking refuge in Tambuwal town.

He also referred to protests in Tambuwal, where residents reportedly blocked the Tambuwal-Jega and Tambuwal-Aleiro roads to express their frustration over the security situation.

The ADC candidate said the situation demanded concrete action rather than political statements.

«“Citizens have the right to know how public resources are being spent and what results those resources are producing.”»

Dan’iya further urged security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and operations in affected areas, while ensuring that perpetrators of attacks are arrested and prosecuted.

He said the insecurity was also taking a toll on agriculture and local economies, as displaced farmers were unable to access their farms and communities continued to struggle with the disruption of normal economic activities.

The ADC candidate called for an emergency support programme for displaced residents, including assistance for affected families and measures to restore safe access to farms and markets.

He also urged the government to collaborate with traditional rulers, community leaders and security agencies to restore peace and stability in the affected communities.
