The management of Abia State University, Uturu, has lifted the suspension of a lecturer in the Department of Economics, Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze, following an appeal by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ABSU chapter.
The decision was communicated to Nwaeze in a letter dated September 3, 2026, and signed by the Acting Registrar of the university, Dr Joy Nwankwo.
The letter stated that the suspension was lifted with immediate effect following a formal request from the university’s ASUU chapter.
“Following a written plea from ASUU-ABSU, the University Management hereby lifts your suspension effective immediately,” the university stated.
However, the institution clarified that the decision did not terminate the ongoing investigation into the lecturer.
“This lifting is, however, without prejudice to the extant investigative panel on you, whose ultimate report is being awaited,” the letter added.
Nwaeze had previously raised concerns about conditions at the university in a Facebook post, including issues relating to salaries and unpaid allowances.
Following the post, the university suspended him indefinitely and set up an investigative panel to examine the issues surrounding his actions.
His suspension subsequently became a major point of contention between the university management and the ABSU chapter of ASUU, which embarked on industrial action and reportedly made his reinstatement one of its conditions for ending the strike.
The development also attracted the attention of the Abia State Government, which said the matter was an internal affair of the university. Governor Alex Otti, however, later addressed some of the demands raised by the union.
Confirming the suspension had been lifted on Saturday, the ASUU-ABSU Chairman, Prof Chidi Mba, said the union would continue to address the matter through administrative channels.
“Yes, the University has lifted the suspension. However, I cannot comment on the content. We are handling it administratively,” Mba said.
