The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University branch, has suspended its four-week-old “No Pay, No Work” strike over unpaid allowances.
The university, formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, had been affected by the industrial action since August 12, 2026.
The union had embarked on the strike to demand the payment of its members’ outstanding Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance.
According to the branch chairman, Terseer Abari, the university had paid the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and Earned Academic Allowance components of the salaries.
However, the CATA and Professorial Allowance were only paid for January and February 2026, while 39 per cent of the CATA for March had been paid.
In a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, Abari said the decision to suspend the strike followed progress made during the negotiations and the resolution of some of the issues that prompted the industrial action.
He said the branch congress had directed members to resume their official duties from Friday, September 11, 2026.
“The outcome of the struggle demonstrated the strength of collective action, unity and determination in the pursuit of the legitimate interests and welfare of university workers,” the statement partly read.
The union also appreciated the university management for its efforts and cooperation during the strike, while expressing readiness for further discussions on issues affecting the welfare of its members and the development of the institution.
ASUU urged its members to return to their duty posts with renewed commitment and dedication, while reaffirming its commitment to defending their legitimate interests through collective bargaining and constructive engagement.
Abari also thanked students, members of the public, stakeholders, individuals and organisations for their understanding and support during the period of the industrial action.
