Abia varsity ASUU suspends strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Abia State University chapter, has suspended its ongoing industrial action and directed its members to return to work with immediate effect.

The decision was taken at the union’s congress on Friday, August 28, 2026, following a review of developments surrounding the issues that triggered the strike.

In a statement jointly signed by the branch Chairperson, Dr Chidi Mba, and Secretary, Dr Victor Obisike, the union said its members had agreed to suspend the action while giving the university management additional time to address one of its outstanding demands.

The union expressed particular concern over the continued suspension of Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze.

It gave the university management until Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall the lecturer and revoke his suspension.

The union warned that failure to meet the deadline would result in the resumption of the industrial action.

“We are giving the university management up to Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze and lift his suspension,” the statement said.

It added, “The failure by management to comply within this stipulated period would leave us with no option but to resume the suspended industrial action.”

The union appealed to its members to remain united as discussions over the outstanding issues continue.

“We urge our members to remain united and committed to the ideals of our union as we continue to pursue the resolution of outstanding issues affecting us,” it said.

The branch leadership also commended members for their support and determination throughout the industrial action.

“Your steadfastness and collective resolve have been invaluable to the progress recorded,” the union stated.

The union further clarified that the branch chairperson remained the only person authorised to issue official statements on behalf of ASUU-ABSU.

It advised members who require further information or clarification on the development to contact the branch chairperson directly.
