ASUU begins indefinite strike over unpaid arrears at Plateau varsity

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University, Bokkos chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over the university management’s alleged failure to resolve its six-point list of demands.

According to The Punch the union announced the industrial action on Wednesday following a congress meeting held after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university administration on August 11.

In a statement signed by the chapter’s Chairperson, Vincent D. Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, ASUU said none of its demands had been satisfactorily addressed despite the expiration of the ultimatum.

Among the issues raised by the union is the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme, as well as the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.

The lecturers are also demanding the payment of outstanding arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.

Other demands include the provision of safe and secure accommodation for staff, the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence and an end to what the union described as the intimidation of its leaders.

ASUU further demanded the payment of 22 months’ arrears relating to the 25/35 per cent wage award.

The union said, “Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed.”
