ASUU suspends strike at three Lagos universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its industrial action at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), directing lecturers to return to work immediately.

The decision followed negotiations with the Lagos State Government over staff welfare and the implementation of outstanding agreements, according to a statement jointly issued by the union’s representatives on Friday.

The statement was signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman of ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman of ASUU-LASUSTECH.

The union described the development as a significant step towards addressing its demands.

“Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organisations,” the statement said.

The suspension is expected to ease the disruption of academic activities at the three institutions and bring relief to students and parents affected by the strike.

ASUU expressed gratitude to media organisations, civil society groups, traditional rulers, students, parents and other stakeholders who supported its demands and the negotiation process.

It specifically acknowledged the contributions of the Joint Action Front, Education Rights Concern and the Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights, noting their advocacy for improved conditions in public tertiary institutions.

The union also commended traditional rulers for their interventions and thanked students and parents for their patience throughout the industrial action.

While directing its members to resume academic activities without delay, ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining academic standards and improving the quality of university education.

“As our members return to the classrooms with immediate effect, we reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence and quality university education,” the statement added.

However, the union said discussions with the Lagos State Government would continue until all outstanding issues concerning its members’ welfare packages were fully resolved.
