Jigawa varsity ASUU gives govt two weeks to avert strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, at Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Jigawa State Government to address outstanding demands or face industrial action.

The union said the proposed strike would begin on September 15, 2026, if the government fails to implement the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government and settle accumulated arrears.

The demands include unpaid allowances, promotion arrears, annual increments, third-party deductions and the release of the approved 2024/2025 Earned Academic Allowance.

The position was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman and Secretary of ASUU-SLUK, Idris Chiromawa and Salisu Yunusa, after a special congress held on Tuesday.

The lecturers said they reviewed the level of implementation of the 2025 ASUU-FG agreement and resolved to give the government two weeks to act.

The union stated, “We have issued a two-week ultimatum to the Jigawa State Government to fully implement the 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement and pay the accrued arrears from January 2026 to date.”

It warned that failure to meet the demands would trigger industrial action.

The union said, “The congress will proceed on an industrial action effective from 15th September 2026 should the Government fail to implement the agreement.”

ASUU also asked the government to exempt Sule Lamido University from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, arguing that the system does not adequately reflect the peculiarities of the institution.

It further demanded the remittance of outstanding third-party deductions and a review of the government’s decision to reduce the 0.7 per cent deduction from the statutory two per cent Local Government Contribution to the university.

The lecturers also called for the settlement of responsibility allowances, annual increments outstanding since 2023 and promotion arrears dating back to 2024.

However, the Jigawa State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Yusuf Chamo, said the government had only recently received communication from the National Universities Commission concerning the Federal Government agreement.

Chamo said, “The state government had only just received the memo from the National Universities Commission regarding the Federal Government agreement this month of September.”

He explained that the government was yet to study the document and factor the financial implications into its budget.

The commissioner added that the state government remained willing to engage the lecturers in dialogue to prevent disruption of academic activities.

He said the administration of Governor Umar Namadi remained committed to improving the state’s education sector.
