Iran executes man over alleged US, Israel links

Iranian authorities have executed Majid Adineh, a man accused of supporting hostile groups during anti-government protests that swept across the country earlier this year.

The execution was carried out on Sunday morning after the Supreme Court upheld a death sentence handed down by the Karaj Revolutionary Court, according to the judiciary’s Mizan Online website.

Adineh was convicted of “operational action in favour of hostile groups” in connection with the nationwide demonstrations, which began over economic difficulties and later developed into broader anti-government protests.

The judiciary also accused him of “deliberate arson, gathering and collusion with the intention of committing crimes against the country’s internal security”.

“Based on numerous documents and evidence in the case and the defendant’s statements, the Karaj Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death and confiscation of all his property.”

Authorities said Adineh and another suspect were arrested on January 9 in Alborz province, west of Tehran.

They were allegedly found carrying “a revolver, ammunition, two tasers, two tear gas canisters, a rechargeable chainsaw, and a bottle of gasoline”.

The protests, which erupted in late December over rising living costs, intensified and reached their peak on January 8 and 9.

Iranian authorities said more than 3,000 people were killed during the unrest, which they described as involving “terrorist acts” allegedly organised by the United States and Israel.

Adineh is among several people executed in connection with the protests.

Iranian authorities have also carried out executions in cases linked to the wider Middle East conflict, which began on February 28 following US-Israeli strikes against Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty, Iran executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, the highest annual figure recorded in the country since 1989.

Amnesty International has described Iran as the country carrying out the second-highest number of executions globally, after China.
