Marseille opened the 2026-27 Ligue 1 campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising to a 4-0 victory over 10-man Strasbourg at the Orange Velodrome on Friday.
Amine Gouiri was the star of the show, scoring twice after the break as new Marseille manager Bruno Genesio began his tenure with a convincing win.
Marseille dominated from the opening exchanges, with Angel Gomes coming close twice in the first half.
His first effort went wide before he was denied by Filip Jorgensen after a scramble inside the Strasbourg penalty area.
Amine Harit also tested Jorgensen shortly before the interval, but Marseille eventually broke the deadlock just 58 seconds after half-time.
Igor Paixao beat Guela Doue before advancing and finding Gomes, who delivered the ball across goal for Gouiri to finish from close range.
Strasbourg’s task became even more difficult shortly before the hour mark when Samir El Mourabet was sent off following a VAR review for striking Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg off the ball.
Marseille were awarded a penalty soon afterwards after Doue was judged to have brought down Paixao inside the box.
Gouiri stepped up and calmly converted to double the hosts’ advantage.
The home side continued to press for more goals and were rewarded late on.
Twenty-year-old Keyliane Abdallah made it 3-0 in the 89th minute with a finish at the near post, before Hojbjerg completed the rout with a controlled volley deep into stoppage time.
The victory gave Genesio an ideal start at Marseille, while Gouiri immediately placed himself among the early contenders for the Ligue 1 Golden Boot.
Marseille recorded 14 shots and 1.89 expected goals, while Strasbourg managed only five attempts and 0.20 xG.
Gouiri led all players with five shots and nine touches inside the opposition box, while also drawing three fouls.
The forward has now contributed directly to 11 goals in his last eight home appearances across all competitions, scoring eight and providing three assists.
Friday’s performance also marked his second brace during that run.
