NNPP spokesman Ladipo Johnson resigns amid opposition coalition talks

The National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Ladipo Johnson, has resigned from the party, citing the need for a broader opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Johnson announced his resignation in a letter dated May 4, 2026, addressed to the chairman of NNPP Ward G1 in the Shitta/Ogunlana area of Surulere Local Government, Lagos State.

In the letter, the former spokesperson said his resignation takes immediate effect as Nigeria’s political landscape enters a period of realignment.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party, effective immediately,” Johnson stated.

He expressed appreciation to the party for giving him the opportunity to serve in various capacities, including as National Auditor and later National Publicity Secretary.

“It has been a distinct honour to serve our party at the highest levels. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have contributed my quota to our collective vision,” he said.

Johnson also thanked members of the party’s National Working Committee for their cooperation during his tenure.

“My time serving on the National Working Committee has been rewarding. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to my colleagues on the NWC for their camaraderie and shared dedication,” he added.

Explaining the reason behind his departure, Johnson said the current political climate demands a stronger and united opposition movement.

“This decision stems from my conviction that the current political climate necessitates a broader national realignment of the opposition. I believe that at this juncture, my political journey must focus on fostering a more unified front to serve the overarching interests of our nation and its citizens,” the letter read.

Although he did not disclose his next political destination, sources within the NNPP said Johnson is expected to align with former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other leaders of the Kwankwasiyya movement in the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

A party source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described Johnson as a key ally of Kwankwaso within the NNPP.

“He is likely to join Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso and other associates in the NDC. Ladipo Johnson has always played a strategic role for Kwankwaso, especially in managing the party’s publicity structure,” the source said.

The resignation comes days after former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Kwankwaso reportedly joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen opposition collaboration ahead of the next general election.

Both politicians had urged party supporters to avoid internal disputes and focus on building a stable opposition platform capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027.
