A United States official has rejected Iranian claims that Iran fired two missiles at a US Navy vessel as it attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The denial, attributed to an unnamed US official, was conveyed to Axios and Channel 12 reporter Barak Ravid, according to the reports.
There has so far been no formal public statement from the United States government confirming or addressing the alleged incident, which Iran says occurred on Monday.
The Iranian report had suggested that its forces launched the missiles after the US naval vessel tried to move through the strategically important waterway.
Tensions in the region come amid heightened sensitivity around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route through which a significant portion of global oil shipments pass, and where Iran has previously issued warnings regarding foreign naval presence.
The situation also follows comments attributed to US President Donald Trump, who said the United States would “guide out” ships stranded in the strait, a statement Iran referenced in its warning to US forces not to enter the area.
