A Nigerian man identified simply as Herbert has been found dead in his apartment in the United Kingdom, marking another tragic loss within the Nigerian diaspora.
The deceased, a father of three, was said to have died in his sleep at his residence in Thornaby, leaving behind his wife and young children. His sudden passing comes barely a week after the death of another Nigerian, a mother of three, who died after battling illness in the UK.
Details of Herbert’s death emerged through a social media post by a user known as “The Stress Manager,” who described the incident as shocking and emotionally devastating for the family.
“Herbert, a calm and devoted Nigerian husband and father, passed away suddenly in his sleep,” the post read.
“Just days earlier, he had been struggling with the loss of his father in Nigeria, which had already taken a toll on him emotionally and financially.”
According to the account, Herbert had been unable to travel home for his father’s burial but contributed financially to ensure a proper farewell. Tragically, he died on the same day his father was laid to rest.
The situation was made even more distressing as his children reportedly discovered his lifeless body at home.
“No child should have to go through that kind of experience,” the post added. “Now his wife is left to care for three young children while also dealing with the financial burden of funeral arrangements.”
A former president of the Nigerians in the UK community, Benjamin Kuti, confirmed the incident and called on members of the diaspora to support the bereaved family.
“This is a painful loss, and the family needs all the support they can get at this difficult time,” Kuti said in an appeal.
A fundraising campaign has since been launched to assist with funeral expenses and the repatriation of Herbert’s remains to Nigeria. As of the time of reporting, over £2,600 had been raised toward a £7,000 target.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the welfare of Nigerians living abroad, particularly those dealing with emotional and financial pressures without strong support systems.
Herbert is remembered by those who knew him as a dedicated family man whose sudden death has left a deep void in the lives of his loved ones.
