Russia’s Putin offers support as US, Iran talks fail

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, on Sunday held a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing support for efforts aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East amid the breakdown of talks between Iran and United States.

The development followed the abrupt collapse of negotiations in Islamabad, where the entire US delegation reportedly pulled out after discussions failed to produce any significant breakthrough.

A US official confirmed that no members of the negotiating team remained in the Pakistani capital to continue any form of back-channel engagement.

According to officials, the delegation, which included lead negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, left after extended marathon sessions ended without measurable progress on issues surrounding the Iran-related conflict.

During a stopover at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, a US official accompanying Vice President JD Vance said the team fully departed the region despite earlier expectations that some discussions might continue behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf criticised Washington’s approach, saying it failed to establish confidence during the negotiations.

“My colleagues in the Iranian delegation put forward constructive initiatives, but the other side was unable to gain the trust of the Iranian delegation,” he said in a post on X.
