Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Kwankwaso completed his registration with the party on Monday, receiving his membership card at Gidan Kwankwasiyya in Kano.
His move comes barely 24 hours after he announced his resignation from the NNPP.
Confirming his exit in an earlier statement, the former Kano State governor said, “I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party with immediate effect.”
He described the decision as difficult but necessary, citing the need for a strategic political realignment.
“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.
However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effect meaningful change,” he stated.
The event drew the presence of several prominent political figures, including ADC National Chairman, David Mark; former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, among others.
Also in attendance were Senator Dino Melaye and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun.
Kwankwaso expressed appreciation to the leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, particularly its National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their support during his time in the party.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
His defection is expected to influence political alignments ahead of the next election cycle, as opposition figures continue to explore new alliances.
