EPL: Joao Pedro bags first hattrick as Chelsea thrash Aston Villa 4-1

João Pedro struck his first-ever Premier League hat-trick as Chelsea F.C. powered to a resounding 4-1 victory over Aston Villa F.C. at Villa Park, boosting their push for a UEFA Champions League spot.

Separated by six points heading into the contest, both sides understood the significance of the showdown in the race for Europe’s elite competition.

Villa, who started the night above the Blues in the standings, wasted no time asserting themselves.

Inside three minutes, Douglas Luiz cleverly backheeled Leon Bailey’s delivery beyond the goalkeeper to give the hosts an early advantage.

Chelsea, eager to respond after their Matchday 28 setback against Arsenal, gradually found their rhythm.

Pedro threatened first with a header that forced a sharp save from Emiliano Martínez, before Cole Palmer tested the Argentine with a more comfortable effort.

The equaliser eventually arrived when Pedro reacted quickest to Malo Gusto’s driven low cross, sliding in to convert into an unguarded net.

Villa looked dangerous as the half progressed, with Ollie Watkins at the heart of their attacks.

The England striker twice troubled Filip Jørgensen and even thought he had restored the lead after capitalising on a loose pass from Reece James. However, his finish was chalked off for a marginal offside call.

That let-off proved costly. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Pedro showcased his composure, lifting a delicate chip over Martínez to notch his 13th league goal of the season and send Chelsea into the break ahead.

The visitors maintained their momentum after the restart. Although Palmer had endured a quiet first half, he made his mark when he fired home after Martínez parried James’ cross into a dangerous area, stretching Chelsea’s advantage.

With confidence flowing, the Blues added a fourth through a slick team move. Palmer’s perfectly timed through ball released Alejandro Garnacho, who unselfishly squared for Pedro to complete his treble in style.

Garnacho nearly added further gloss late on, only to be denied from close range by Martínez, but the damage had already been done.

It was an emphatic statement from Liam Rosenior’s side, who now edge closer to the top four.

For Villa, the defeat leaves Unai Emery’s men with just one win in their last six home matches, a worrying return for a team with ambitions of returning to the Champions League stage next season.
