La Liga: Getafe stun Real Madrid 1-0 amid red cards at Bernabeu

Real Madrid’s title hopes took another hit on Monday night as Getafe pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu, courtesy of a thunderous first-half strike from Martín Satriano.

Having weathered sustained early pressure from the hosts, Getafe delivered the decisive blow in the 39th minute.

A partially cleared ball was nodded back into danger by Mauro Arambarri, and as it dropped invitingly on the right edge of the box, Satriano unleashed a fierce first-time volley that flew beyond Thibaut Courtois and into the top corner.

The defeat leaves Madrid further adrift in the LaLiga title race, still chasing leaders Barcelona, and comes on the heels of their dramatic late loss to Osasuna last weekend.

Without the injured Kylian Mbappé, sidelined with a left knee sprain, Los Blancos started brightly.

Vinícius Júnior was lively from the outset, dragging an early effort wide before testing David Soria after capitalising on a Sebastián Boselli error.

The Getafe goalkeeper reacted quickly to divert the Brazilian’s low drive past the post.

Soria proved pivotal throughout the first half. He denied Arda Güler with a sharp save in the 24th minute and remained composed as Madrid probed for an opener.

At the other end, Diego Rico nearly stunned the hosts earlier with a well-struck volley, only for Trent Alexander-Arnold to throw himself in the way and block..

Madrid pushed for a response before the interval, but Aurélien Tchouaméni’s glancing header from Vinícius’ cross lacked the power to trouble Soria.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Madrid dominated possession and territory, yet clear-cut chances were scarce.

Thiago Pitarch tried his luck from distance, but his effort was comfortably gathered.

Coach Álvaro Arbeloa sought to inject urgency with a triple substitution, introducing Rodrygo, Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal just before the hour mark.

Despite pinning Getafe deep inside their own half, Madrid could not break through. Antonio Rüdiger sent a header flashing across goal, while Huijsen arrived a fraction too late at the far post.

Rodrygo later nodded the ball across the six-yard area, but once again no white shirt was on hand to convert.

Mastantuono, brought on to spark creativity, forced another smart stop from Soria late on, but frustration ultimately boiled over.

In stoppage time, the substitute was shown a straight red card for dissent, compounding Madrid’s misery.

Getafe also finished with 10 men after Adrián Liso received a second booking for kicking the ball away.

Speaking after the final whistle, defender Kiko Femenía praised his side’s resilience. “Coming here is always very difficult,” he said. “We have to congratulate the team. We did a superb job at the back and scored when we had the chance. We might even have added more on the counter.”

The victory lifts Getafe up to 11th in the table, now eight points clear of the relegation zone, while Madrid are left searching for answers as the title race tightens.
