Amorim’s dismissal may cost Man Utd £16m — Report

Manchester United could be facing a hefty financial fallout following the dismissal of manager Ruben Amorim, with newly released figures indicating the decision may cost the club close to £16 million ($22 million).

Amorim’s stormy 14-month spell at Old Trafford was brought to an abrupt end on January 5 after he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy.

His exit also saw five members of his backroom staff depart alongside him.

In a filing submitted to the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, United detailed the potential financial implications of the managerial change.

The disclosure came just a day after the club announced a £32.6 million profit in their second-quarter financial results covering the period up to December 31, 2025.

Classifying Amorim’s departure as an “event that occurred after the reporting period”, the club stated: “A charge of £6.3 million for the write off of related intangible assets and a provision of £15.9 million, representing the maximum potential amount of future settlement payments, will be recognised in the statement of profit or (loss) during the second half of the year ending 30 June 2026.”

Reports suggest the £15.9 million figure represents a maximum payout and is subject to conditions, including whether the 41-year-old secures alternative employment within a specified timeframe.

The accounts also confirm that United have paid Sporting CP £6.3 million — the remaining balance owed in compensation for appointing Amorim.

In an earlier November 2024 filing, the club revealed it had agreed to pay Sporting £10 million to bring him in as successor to Erik ten Hag, whose own departure package cost £10.4 million.

When all associated costs are combined, Amorim’s appointment and subsequent exit could total as much as £37.3 million for United.

On the pitch, Amorim won 25 of his 63 matches in charge. His tenure ended with United languishing in 15th place — their poorest league showing since relegation from the top flight in the 1973/74 campaign.

At the time of his dismissal, however, United were sixth in the table, with reports pointing to a serious disagreement between Amorim and director of football Jason Wilcox shortly before his final match against Leeds.

Since then, caretaker manager Michael Carrick has overseen a resurgence.

A sequence of five victories and one draw has propelled the club up to fourth place, reviving hopes of securing qualification for next season’s Champions League.
