The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command, Olusola Odumosu, has cautioned officers on election duty to maintain professionalism and avoid accidental discharge during the ongoing Area Council elections.
Odumosu gave the warning on Saturday while addressing security personnel deployed across the six area councils in the FCT ahead of the polls.
He stressed that officers must handle their weapons responsibly and remain disciplined throughout the exercise.
“You must demonstrate professionalism in the discharge of your duties,” he told the personnel.
“Avoid accidental discharges and conduct yourselves responsibly while securing voters and electoral materials.”
The NSCDC said it had deployed about 4,000 officers across the territory to ensure safety before, during, and after the elections.
More than 1.5 million registered voters are participating in the polls to elect chairmen and councillors in councils including the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji and Kwali.
In total, 68 political positions are being contested, comprising six chairmanship seats and 62 councillorship positions.
Odumosu reiterated that the corps would work with other security agencies to maintain order and guarantee a peaceful voting process across the Federal Capital Territory.
“Our deployment is to ensure that residents can vote in a safe and secure environment,” he added.
