Newcastle United snatched a dramatic 4-3 victory over Leeds United at St. James’ Park, with Harvey Barnes emerging as the late hero.
The Magpies came from behind three times in a pulsating encounter, finally sealing the win with Barnes’ 102nd-minute strike.
Leeds initially took the lead in the 32nd minute when Brenden Aaronson capitalised on Malick Thiaw’s slip, firing a low shot into the bottom-left corner.
Newcastle responded quickly, with Barnes equalising just four minutes later following a neat lay-off from Nick Woltemade.
The first-half drama continued when Leeds were awarded a penalty in stoppage time after Thiaw handled the ball, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin converting to restore Leeds’ lead.
Nine minutes into the second half, Joelinton headed Newcastle level again from Bruno Guimaraes’ precise cross.
Leeds struck back late through Aaronson, who calmly finished a right-footed shot off the post, only for his night to turn sour moments later. A handball by Aaronson in the box allowed Guimaraes to score a penalty, forcing the game into a nail-biting finish.
Barnes then delivered the ultimate blow, curling his effort past Lucas Perri to spark scenes of wild celebration.
His goal, timed at 101 minutes and 48 seconds, is officially the latest-ever winning goal in Premier League history since Opta began tracking in 2006-07.
Aaronson made history as the first Leeds player to score twice against Newcastle since 1975 and the first at St. James’ Park since 1956.
However, he also became the first player to score twice and concede a penalty in a Premier League match since Grant Holt in 2012.
In total, the match saw 32 shots (18 for Newcastle, 14 for Leeds) and an expected goals (xG) tally of 4.77, highlighting the high-intensity, end-to-end nature of this classic top-flight clash.
Newcastle also recorded their first Premier League win after trailing three times in a single match, having previously only salvaged a draw under similar circumstances back in 1996 against Manchester City.
