AFCON: Onyeka disappointed S’Eagles conceded goals against Tunisia

Frank Onyeka has admitted his frustration after the Super Eagles allowed Tunisia back into the game during Nigeria’s tense 3-2 victory in their second Group C match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Nigeria looked firmly in control after racing into a 3-0 lead, with Victor Osimhen opening the scoring in the 44th minute, captain Wilfred Ndidi doubling the advantage shortly after the break in the 50th minute, and Ademola Lookman adding a third in the 67th minute.

However, the Tunisians reduced the deficit in the 74th minute when Montassar Talbi headed home from a set piece.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle responded with a double substitution in the 79th minute, which saw Onyeka leave the pitch.

Tunisia continued to press and made it 3-2 late on, as Ali Abdi converted from the penalty spot three minutes from time following a handball by Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Despite the late scare, Nigeria held on to secure all three points and confirm their place in the Round of 16.

Reacting after the match, Onyeka said the team must improve, particularly in situations that led to the two goals conceded.

“I was disappointed that the Tunisians got the two goals especially the penalty and set piece, these are areas we need to do well.”

The Brentford midfielder, however, commended the overall display by the Super Eagles, stressing that the players executed the coach’s game plan.

“I think the performance was good, we tried to follow the instructions of the coach.”

Looking ahead to Nigeria’s final Group C fixture, Onyeka insisted the same approach will be maintained when the Super Eagles face Uganda.

“We will go into the final game with Uganda with the same mindset. The way we played against Tunisia is the same way we will play against Uganda.”

The Super Eagles will take on the Cranes of Uganda on Tuesday, December 30, in Fes. Uganda come into the match after a 1-1 draw with Tanzania in their second group game, played earlier on Saturday.
