Coventry City sign Onyeka on permanent deal from Brentford

Nigeria midfielder, Frank Onyeka, has sealed a permanent move to Coventry City from Brentford for an undisclosed transfer fee after a successful loan spell with the Sky Blues.

The 28-year-old joined Coventry on loan in February and played a key role as Frank Lampard’s side clinched the Sky Bet Championship title, securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years.

Onyeka leaves Brentford after making 87 appearances in all competitions since arriving from Danish club Midtjylland in July 2021, becoming the Bees’ first signing ahead of their maiden Premier League campaign.

Brentford director of football Phil Giles paid tribute to the midfielder, praising his dedication and professionalism throughout his time at the club.

“Frank has been with us since our first Premier League game and has always shown fantastic commitment, work rate and loyalty,” Giles said.

“Ultimately, he probably didn’t start as many games as he would have liked, so the opportunity to join Coventry permanently made sense for everyone involved.

“He played an important role in their promotion and has earned the chance to become a regular Premier League starter. Frank will always be welcome back at Brentford and we wish him every success.”

During his four-year stay in west London, Onyeka featured regularly in Brentford’s debut Premier League season, helping the club finish 13th.

He also represented Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations on multiple occasions.

The midfielder made 23 appearances and provided two assists during the 2022/23 campaign before scoring his only Brentford goal in a Premier League clash against Sheffield United in April 2024.

Onyeka was also part of the Nigeria squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing runners-up after a 2-1 defeat to hosts Ivory Coast.

He spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Bundesliga side Augsburg, where he made 31 appearances, before returning to Brentford and featuring nine times in the first half of last season.

After joining Coventry on loan in February, Onyeka made 14 appearances and scored once as the Sky Blues completed their promotion-winning campaign.

The Nigerian could face his former club again when Coventry travel to the Gtech Community Stadium in February 2027, while Brentford are set to visit the CBS Arena in the final round of fixtures later that year.
