Reuben Amorim has insisted that Everton fully deserved their victory over Manchester United, even while reduced to 10 men.
Everton were reduced early, losing Senegalese international Idrissa Gueye to a red card in the 13th minute after he slapped teammate Michael Keane.
Despite the setback, the Toffees took a surprising lead in the 29th minute through Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, against the flow of play.
Even with 61 minutes of 11v10, Manchester United failed to find an equalizer, let alone a winner, and were left to rue another home defeat.
The result leaves United in 10th place with 18 points, while Everton sit just below in 11th, also on 18 points.
Reacting to the defeat, Amorim told NBC Sports that Everton were clearly the superior side.
“They were the better team with 11 players or 10. I felt since the first minute that we were not there with the same intensity so they deserved the win.”
Reflecting on what went wrong for his side, he added, “The way we faced the game. The other team helped us with a sending off. What we do in every single moment of the game if they have 10, let’s push the opponent to the final third, to be near any transition, really to be focused on the game.”
When asked if the defeat felt like a major step backwards, Amorim said, “Yes especially in the way we played the game. Forget about the results. The result is also really bad but I’m more concerned with the feeling I had during the game.”
