Barcelona suffered their first La Liga defeat of the season as Sevilla produced a memorable performance at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
Ronald Araujo returned to the starting XI following the midweek loss to Paris Saint-Germain, but he was central to the opening goal.
Araujo was judged to have fouled Isaac Romero inside the box, a decision confirmed after a VAR review. Alexis Sanchez stepped up from the penalty spot and converted, scoring against his former club.
Sevilla continued to press, creating several opportunities to extend their lead, most notably through Romero.
After missing two big chances, he made no mistake with his third attempt, slotting home from Ruben Vargas’ pass on the left in the 37th minute to make it 2-0.
Barcelona responded before the break, with Pedri delivering a perfect cross to Marcus Rashford, who volleyed home for his first La Liga goal, keeping the visitors in the contest.
The second half saw Barcelona dominate possession and look for the equaliser. They earned a penalty on 76 minutes when Alejandro Balde was fouled inside the area by Adnan Januzaj.
However, Robert Lewandowski missed the chance, sending the ball wide to the delight of the Sevilla fans.
Sevilla sealed their victory late in the match, with Jose Angel Carmona curling a shot past Wojciech Szczesny in the 90th minute.
Akor Adams then capped off the triumph deep into stoppage time, making it 4-1 to the home side.
The defeat comes immediately after Barcelona’s Champions League loss to PSG, marking back-to-back setbacks.
Hansi Flick will be hoping the upcoming international break provides a chance to regroup, as his side has struggled in these last two fixtures.
The loss leaves Barcelona in second place, while Sevilla climb to fourth in the standings.
