Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo was crowned the Most Valuable Player of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket after a stellar performance that helped the D’Tigress secure their fifth straight continental title.

The dominant forward was instrumental in Nigeria’s 78-64 triumph over Mali in Sunday’s final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Okonkwo, 28, posted a near double-double with 19 points, nine rebounds, and three assists in the championship game.

This marks the second consecutive AfroBasket tournament in which Okonkwo has claimed MVP honours, having first won the award during the 2023 edition held in Rwanda.

She now joins Mfon Udoka as only the second Nigerian player in history to earn back-to-back MVP recognitions, Udoka having done so in 2003 and 2005.

Throughout the tournament, Okonkwo averaged 14 points per game, ranking seventh overall. She also showcased her sharpshooting ability, leading the event in three-point shooting accuracy at 50%, and finishing second in free-throw percentage with 87.5%.

Her consistent brilliance was key to Nigeria’s unbroken dominance in African women’s basketball.
