The Federal Government has paid the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each player of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
The National Sports Commission also confirmed that each official of the team received the naira equivalent of $50,000.
According to the NSC, the payments were made on September 9, 2026, with all the beneficiaries confirming receipt of the funds.
D’Tigress secured a record fifth consecutive Afrobasket title and their seventh overall championship in 2025.
The commission said the payment marked the completion of all the rewards promised to the team by President Bola Tinubu after their historic victory.
In a statement signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, on Wednesday, the NSC said the presidential package consisted of three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, national honours and cash awards.
The statement said, “With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, comprising a three-bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and naira equivalent of $100,000 to players and $50,000 to officials, have been fully redeemed and completed.”
The NSC recalled that the players and officials had received title documents for their Abuja apartments as well as certificates of national honours in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France.
It said the documents were duly signed by the President.
The commission explained that the cash component was paid after the team’s participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The NSC also gave an update on the presidential rewards promised to the Super Falcons following their achievements in women’s football.
It said the Falcons had already received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates of national honours during the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
According to the commission, the cash component of the Falcons’ reward is expected to be paid before their next official engagements.
The Super Falcons were promised the same financial package of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each official, payable in the naira equivalent.
The NSC said the rewards reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian athletes and appropriately recognising their achievements.
“This unprecedented rewards to the players and athletes by the Federal Government of Nigeria is in alignment with the Renewed Hope initiative and Shared Prosperity agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, which places athletes’ welfare and appropriate rewards top on the priority list,” the statement added.
The commission also commended the President for his support for Nigerian sports, saying his policies had strengthened its reform programme and efforts to build a sustainable sports economy.
It further acknowledged the contributions of relevant ministries and government agencies, including the Ministries of Finance, Federal Capital Territory, Housing and Urban Development, Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, as well as the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
The NSC said their collaboration enabled the rewards to be processed “in record time within the due process requirements.”
