The National Executive Council of the Labour Party has fixed May 23 for its presidential primary as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman, Ken Asogwa.
According to Asogwa, the date forms part of the party’s approved election timetable adopted during a statutory NEC meeting monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He said, “The National Executive Council approved May 23 for the conduct of the party’s presidential primary as part of the timetable for the 2027 general elections.”
He added that the party will submit its membership register to INEC on April 15, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and electoral guidelines.
Asogwa further stated, “The party, in compliance with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines, has also approved April 15 for submission of its membership register.”
Other primaries, including those for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly, have been scheduled for May 15, while ward, local government and state congresses will hold on March 26, March 28 and March 31 respectively.
The party also fixed April 11 for its national convention.
Asogwa said NEC reviewed recent developments within the party, including an alleged invasion of its national secretariat, and ratified disciplinary actions taken against some members over claims of misconduct and anti-party activities.
He said, “Some members were suspended over alleged acts of indiscipline, anti-party activities and involvement in the desecration of the party’s national secretariat.”
He added that the council approved the expansion of the party’s membership registration through both digital and manual processes to improve efficiency and inclusiveness.
NEC also resolved to fill existing vacancies within party structures through interim appointments pending the conduct of proper congresses.
“The council reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of the Interim National Chairman and urged members to use internal mechanisms to resolve disputes,” he added.
