2027: Labour Party shifts primaries to May 30 over Sallah, Democracy Day

The Labour Party has rescheduled its 2027 general election primary elections across all levels, moving the exercise to May 30, 2026.

The adjustment affects the presidential, governorship, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly primaries, which were earlier scheduled for different dates in late May.

According to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the decision was reached after considering key national and religious events that coincide with the earlier timetable.

Initially, the party had fixed its governorship and state assembly primaries for May 27, while presidential and National Assembly primaries were slated for May 29. All have now been consolidated into a single date.

Explaining the rationale behind the shift, Asogwa said the party wanted to ensure inclusivity and allow members participate fully in important national observances.

“In consideration of the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the May 29 Democracy Day anniversary, the Labour Party deemed it necessary to adjust its schedule,” he said.

He added that the decision was taken in good faith to avoid clashes with significant national events and to accommodate aspirants, party members, and supporters.

“The party, as a people-oriented and responsive organisation, found it appropriate to adjust its timetable to enable full participation in these important occasions,” Asogwa stated.

While expressing regret over any inconvenience the change may cause, the party maintained that the adjustment reflects its commitment to sensitivity and inclusiveness in its internal processes.
