20 killed, many missing in Gaza building collapse

At least 20 people, including five children, have been killed after a war-damaged residential building collapsed in Gaza City, with dozens of others still reported missing.

The multi-storey building came down in the Tal al-Hawa area of Gaza City, trapping residents beneath the rubble.

Rescue teams continued searching for survivors and recovering bodies from the collapsed structure.

Local residents said about 10 families had been living in the building despite previous warnings that the property was unsafe because of damage sustained during the war.

The Hamas-run Civil Defence service said its rescuers initially had to work with “empty hands” because of restrictions on equipment entering Gaza.

The teams later secured access to some heavy machinery to assist the rescue operation.

The collapse came amid continued violence in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian health officials and Hamas sources said Israeli air strikes on Tuesday killed at least five Palestinians, including two children and a Hamas commander.

The Israeli military said it had killed a Hamas commander in southern Gaza and another fighter in the north. Palestinian sources said a child was also killed in each of the incidents.

Meanwhile, Medical Aid for Palestinians, a British charity, said a patient was killed by an Israeli drone at a health centre it supports in Jabalia, northern Gaza.
