Yamal leads Spain’s 26-man W’Cup squad, Real Madrid’s players snubbed

Spain head coach, Luis de la Fuente, has unveiled his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Barcelona teenage sensation Lamine Yamal headlining the list released on Monday.

The squad also features Mikel Merino, who recently returned from injury for Arsenal.

The midfielder made his first appearance since January during Arsenal’s final Premier League game of the season against Crystal Palace after recovering from a foot fracture.

Notably, Spain’s squad will head to the World Cup without a single player from Real Madrid for the first time in the tournament’s history.

Defender Dean Huijsen was omitted from the final selection, while experienced full-back Dani Carvajal also missed out following an injury-plagued campaign.

De la Fuente rewarded impressive domestic performances with call-ups for Eric Garcia and Marc Pubill after strong seasons with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively.

Meanwhile, Atletico defender Robin Le Normand was left out.

Spain will again rely heavily on the exciting attacking partnership of Yamal and Nico Williams, who both starred during the country’s triumphant UEFA Euro 2024 campaign.

Despite struggling with fitness problems for much of the season, Williams retained his place in the squad.

However, there are concerns over Yamal’s fitness ahead of the tournament. The 18-year-old winger has been sidelined since late April after suffering a hamstring injury while playing for Barcelona, making him doubtful for Spain’s opening matches.
