FIFA has confirmed that France captain Kylian Mbappe currently leads the race for the adidas Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite being level on goals with Argentina skipper Lionel Messi after the quarter-finals.
The world football governing body placed Mbappe ahead of Messi based on the tournament’s tiebreak criteria after the French forward scored his eighth goal in France’s quarter-final victory over Morocco.
Mbappe has now recorded eight goals and three assists, while Messi also has eight goals but only two assists, leaving the Argentine legend second in the standings.
Norway’s Erling Haaland sits third with seven goals following his brace against Brazil in the quarter-finals. England duo Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane share fourth place with six goals and one assist each.
France winger Ousmane Dembele is sixth with five goals and two assists, while Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr, Mexico’s Julian Quinones, Brazil’s Vinicius Junior and Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal have each scored four goals.
According to a statement on FIFA’s website on Sunday, the Golden Boot will be awarded to the player who finishes as the tournament’s leading scorer.
“If two or more players score the same number of goals, the number of assists (as determined by the members of the FIFA Technical Study Group) shall be decisive.
“If two or more players are still equal after taking into account the number of assists, the total minutes played in the tournament will be taken into account, with the player playing fewer minutes ranked first,” the football body said.
Mbappe also holds an advantage over Messi in total minutes played, having featured for fewer minutes in the competition so far.
