West Ham’s relegation worries deepened after a humiliating 3-0 defeat at Molineux against a Wolves side who had yet to win this season.
The London club was undone early, with Jhon Arias opening the scoring in the fourth minute following a slick Hwang Hee-Chan run and pullback.
Wolves then doubled their lead in the 31st minute when Hwang converted a penalty after Soungoutou Magassa fouled Mateus Mane in the box. Mane sealed the victory with a superb strike from 18 yards, curling a low effort into the bottom corner.
The result made for a miserable return to Molineux for former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, whose attempts to revive West Ham’s fortunes have faltered.
The team has now gone nine Premier League games without a win, leaving them four points from safety in 18th place, with pressure mounting on the Portuguese manager.
For Wolves, the victory was a rare moment of joy in a season otherwise marked by struggle.
After ending an 11-game losing streak with a draw at Manchester United midweek, Rob Edwards’ side displayed renewed energy and confidence. Despite remaining in the relegation zone with just six points, their fans had a reason to celebrate.
West Ham’s response was minimal. Hugo Bueno forced a fine save from Alphonse Areola, while Mane and Yerson Mosquera were also denied in the second half.
Magassa missed a key chance as the visitors failed to register a single shot on target.
Nuno even opted not to use new £21.8million signing Pablo Felipe as the match slipped further from their grasp.
Meanwhile, Wolves supporters revelled in the moment, taunting their former manager and jokingly chanting about league glory as the home side claimed a much-deserved first victory of the campaign.
