Bruno Fernandes has revealed he turned down a highly lucrative move to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in favour of continuing his career at Manchester United, where he remains focused on competing at the highest level.
The United captain disclosed that Al Hilal’s president contacted him about a potential transfer, which would have seen his wages increase fourfold.
However, Fernandes chose to stay put at Old Trafford, citing his desire to keep challenging for major European honours.
“There was that possibility, the president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it. It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future,” Fernandes said.
According to the Portuguese international, his decision was strongly influenced by United manager Ruben Amorim and his wife, both of whom encouraged him to remain in Manchester.
Amorim, who has publicly expressed his desire to retain Fernandes, reiterated his stance during United’s post-season tour of Asia.
“I spoke to the coach Ruben Amorim who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen,” Fernandes explained. “As I have always said, I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so.”
Despite the financial temptation, the 30-year-old midfielder prioritized his professional goals.
“I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. It would have been easy to move there but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it. I am happy with my decision,” he added.
During a challenging campaign for United, Fernandes managed to deliver an impressive 19 goals and 19 assists, earning the club’s Player of the Year award for a fourth time.
However, the season was marred by a disappointing league finish—their worst in over 50 years.
“Our season was very tough. We weren’t able to achieve our goals,” Fernandes admitted, while preparing with the Portugal squad ahead of their Nations League clash against Germany.
Although Fernandes is not for sale, United are reportedly open to parting ways with several other players.
The club is actively pursuing reinforcements, including a £62.5 million move for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, and maintaining interest in Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
