Former Chelsea midfielder, Enzo Fernández, has explained his decision to leave Stamford Bridge for Manchester City, saying he was attracted by the club’s winning mentality and the opportunity to take on a fresh challenge.
The Argentina international completed a British-record £125m transfer to City, making him the first player in football history to move for more than £100m on two separate occasions.
Fernández said Manchester City’s track record of success and the quality of their squad were major factors behind his decision.
“I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success,” Fernández said.
The 25-year-old also expressed his eagerness to learn from his new teammates and continue improving his game.
“If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player,” he added.
Fernández will reunite with City manager Enzo Maresca, having previously worked with the Italian during his spell in charge at Chelsea.
His departure from Chelsea came after a difficult period at the club, during which he was booed by sections of the supporters.
Despite the strained circumstances surrounding his exit, the midfielder said he remained appreciative of his time at Stamford Bridge.
“Chelsea will always be in my heart,” he said in an open letter to the club.
However, Fernández has now turned his attention to his new chapter with Manchester City and pledged to give his best to his new side.
“I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that I will continue now I’m here,” he said.
