Scholes warns Chelsea over Enzo Fernandez’s Man City move

Manchester United, legend, Paul Scholes has warned Chelsea that losing Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City could have a major impact on their Premier League campaign.

Manchester City completed the £125 million signing of the Argentine midfielder on the final day of the transfer window, with Fernandez now set to join Pep Guardiola’s squad.

The 25-year-old missed Chelsea’s opening two Premier League matches of the season and could make his City debut when they face Coventry City next Saturday.

Scholes admitted that he was initially not convinced by Fernandez following his move to England but said the midfielder had gradually changed his opinion through his performances.

“I don’t think he was unhappy at Chelsea, but Manchester City changed his mind,” Scholes said on “The Good, The Bad and The Football” podcast.

The former England midfielder believes Chelsea will struggle to compete for the league title without Fernandez, particularly after using Reece James and Malo Gusto in central midfield.

“If Chelsea want to win the Premier League, which I don’t think they are even capable of achieving anyway, they cannot allow Enzo Fernandez to be sold.”

“They have recently used Malo Gusto in midfield, and that will not be enough. Reece James has also started some matches in central midfield, and that too will not be enough.”

Scholes also praised Fernandez for developing into a quality player since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

“I wasn’t one of the biggest fans of Enzo when he arrived, but he won me over with time, and he has now become a wonderful player. He will be an excellent addition to Manchester City, but Chelsea cannot allow the deal to go through, because City are a direct rival,”

According to Scholes, Chelsea have already suffered from City’s involvement in their affairs, particularly over former manager Enzo Maresca.

“City have already embarrassed Chelsea in the manager story, as it is clear they spoke to him about taking on the job during the summer.”

He claimed Maresca’s situation had already damaged Chelsea during a period when the club were performing strongly.

“This matter already ruined Chelsea’s (last) season, because the team were performing at a wonderful level at that time and were doing very well.”

Scholes concluded by warning Chelsea that Fernandez’s move could create another difficult season for the London club.

“Enzo Fernandez’s move to Manchester City could ruin Chelsea’s season once again.”
