Spanish international left-back, Marc Cucurella, has spoken for the first time since his big-money move to Real Madrid this summer, expressing both excitement and clarity over his decision after completing a switch that immediately became one of the window’s headline transfers.
Speaking at a press conference earlier today, Cucurella made no attempt to hide his enthusiasm about joining the Santiago Bernabéu side, while also highlighting the decisive influence of Jose Mourinho in shaping his final decision.
Barcelona interest and emotional exit
Having progressed through FC Barcelona’s youth system, Cucurella’s move to their fiercest rivals was always expected to trigger strong reactions from supporters.
Barcelona were indeed in the race for his signature, but the defender admitted that Real Madrid’s approach quickly changed the landscape.
“Atletico Madrid and Barcelona interest? Real Madrid came very strongly. The interest wasn’t reported anywhere and that was very important for me because we are in a World Cup. I wanted it done immediately; it’s impossible to reject Real Madrid,” he said.
Addressing criticism from Barcelona fans, he acknowledged their frustration while standing firmly behind his decision.
“Barça fans are angry with me? Well, it’s impossible to reject Real Madrid,” he said.
“I’m grateful for everything I experienced with Barcelona, but when Real Madrid call, it’s very hard to reject it. I’m very happy,” Cucurella added.
Mourinho’s influence and rapid agreement
Cucurella also revealed how quickly the transfer was completed once Real Madrid formalised their interest, noting that talks progressed within a single day.
“Real Madrid? They called me in the morning and told me it was all done between them and Chelsea. I didn’t doubt for a second and it was done in one day. I’m really excited,” he said.
He went on to explain the importance of Mourinho’s personal involvement in the move.
“When a manager like Jose Mourinho calls you, it’s something very important. He told me the things I did when we played against Benfica, about the impression I made as a teammate, as well as a player, and that gave me the confidence to know it was the right move,” Cucurella said.
Chelsea departure and final thoughts
Reflecting on his exit from Chelsea FC, the defender admitted it was not an easy decision but insisted the move represents a major step in his career.
“It wasn’t easy leaving Chelsea, but I think joining Real Madrid is the correct choice. I get to return to my country and play for the greatest club in the world,” he concluded.
