Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spain international Marc Cucurella from Chelsea on a contract running until 2032.
While the Spanish giants did not disclose the transfer fee, sources told ESPN that the deal is valued at an initial €55 million, with a further €5 million in potential add-ons.
Cucurella becomes Madrid’s first confirmed arrival of the summer transfer window, although ESPN previously reported that agreements are also in place for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté, Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries and Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva.
The move comes shortly after Madrid announced José Mourinho as their new head coach following Álvaro Arbeloa’s departure, with the Portuguese manager said to have been instrumental in pushing for Cucurella’s signing.
The 27-year-old defender is currently in the United States with the Spain squad ahead of their World Cup opener against Cabo Verde in Atlanta on Monday.
Madrid are also expected to strengthen further in the coming weeks. Konaté and Silva are due to become free agents at the end of June when their contracts with Liverpool and Manchester City expire, while the club are reportedly preparing to activate a €20 million clause to sign Dumfries from Inter Milan.
Cucurella had long been open to a return to Spain and attracted interest from both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid before eventually choosing the Santiago Bernabéu.
Sources told ESPN that Barcelona explored the possibility of re-signing their former academy graduate earlier this year but decided against pursuing the move further as they focused on reinforcing other areas of the squad.
Atlético Madrid had advanced further in their pursuit, but Real Madrid accelerated negotiations after Mourinho’s return and sealed the transfer in recent days.
His arrival could intensify the rivalry in next season’s Clásico fixtures due to his strong Barcelona roots.
Born in Catalonia, Cucurella progressed through La Masia and made a single senior appearance for Barcelona in a Copa del Rey match during the 2017-18 campaign.
He later spent time on loan at Eibar and Getafe before joining Getafe permanently.
Subsequent spells at Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea followed, with the Blues signing him in 2022 for €65 million.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Cucurella established himself as a regular starter, making 163 appearances and helping Chelsea lift the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup titles.
However, the defender became increasingly frustrated with the club’s lack of progress and publicly questioned Chelsea’s decision to dismiss former manager Enzo Maresca earlier this year.
“If you asked me, I would not done it,” Cucurella said after Chelsea’s Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain, when he also criticised the club’s general direction.
“You are fighting and training every day only to realise, at the very end, that when games matter, we are still a bit away from the top level,” he added.
“I understand this is part of the club’s policy and they want to take this direction — signing young players and looking to the future. But, for all of us who are still here and want to win big things, moments like this make you feel discouraged.”
With his future settled, Cucurella will now turn his full attention to Spain’s World Cup campaign, where he remains Luis de la Fuente’s preferred option at left-back.
He played a major role in Spain’s triumph at the 2024 European Championship and famously dyed his hair red after their final victory over England.
Cucurella has also vowed to get a tattoo of coach De la Fuente if Spain go on to win the World Cup this summer.
