United States President, Donald Trump, on Saturday said a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner would not change his stance on the Iran war, even as he acknowledged uncertainty over any possible connection between the incident and the conflict.
“It’s not going to deter me from winning the war in Iran. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it, I really don’t think so, based on what we know,” Trump told reporters during a briefing at the White House following the alarming security incident.
Earlier, Trump had suggested there could still be a link, saying “you never know” whether the shooting was connected to the Iran war, while noting that investigators were actively probing the motive behind the attack. He described the suspect as a “lone wolf.”
In a related development, the US president also announced earlier on Saturday that he had called off his envoys’ planned trip to Pakistan for peace discussions with Iran.
He said the decision followed dissatisfaction with Tehran’s negotiating position after nearly two months of conflict.
