VIDEO: Panic as building collapses in Lagos, traps multiple victims

A two-storey uncompleted building collapsed in the Ota-Ona area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Monday afternoon, trapping several people under the rubble.

The incident occurred opposite the Mobil Filling Station (formerly Bugon Filling Station), sending panic through the neighborhood as the structure suddenly caved in.

Eyewitness Rasheed Fatuga raised the alarm on Facebook, confirming the collapse occurred around midday. He shared a video showing emergency responders and bystanders scrambling to rescue victims.

“So far, five people have been rescued alive,” Fatuga stated. “But we don’t know how many are still under the building.”

Emergency teams, including Lagos State Emergency Management Agency responders, worked alongside residents and volunteers to clear debris and search for survivors. Heavy equipment was deployed to assist in the operation as crowds gathered at the scene.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the collapse or confirmed the total number of people trapped. The building’s structural integrity and compliance with construction regulations will likely be investigated once rescue efforts conclude.

LASEMA officials and construction safety experts are expected to release an official statement after completing their assessment. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about building safety standards in Lagos, where collapses have occurred frequently in recent years.

As night fell, rescue operations continued under floodlights, with hopes of finding more survivors dwindling. The Lagos State Government has pledged full support for victims and their families while vowing to investigate potential negligence.
