The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of beloved Nollywood actor Tom Njemanze, who passed away on Friday at the age of 75 after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.
Njemanze, who rose to fame in the 1990s during Nollywood’s golden era, had been battling health issues for some time. His condition came to public attention when filmmaker Stanley Ontop shared a heartfelt Instagram video appeal for financial assistance to help cover the veteran actor’s urgent surgery costs.
The legendary actor leaves behind an impressive filmography that includes classic titles such as Tokunboh, Pounds and Dollars, Atosa, Issakaba, Osuofia in London, Brain Box, and Igbotic Love.
Known for his distinctive deep voice, expressive delivery, and commanding screen presence, Njemanze became one of Nollywood’s most recognizable faces, endearing himself to audiences across Nigeria and the diaspora.
Since news of his passing broke, tributes have flooded social media from colleagues, fans, and family members who remembered him as both a talented performer and humble human being.
“Tom was more than just an actor – he was a pillar of our industry,” said longtime collaborator and fellow Nollywood veteran Enebeli Elebuwa. “His performances weren’t acting, they were life lessons delivered with that unforgettable voice.”
The actor’s death marks the end of an era for many Nigerians who grew up watching his iconic performances during Nollywood’s formative years. Industry analysts note Njemanze represented a generation of actors who helped establish Nigeria’s film industry as a continental powerhouse.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in coming days. The Actors Guild of Nigeria has pledged to support the Njemanze family during this difficult period.
