Ukraine backs energy ceasefire with Russia – Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has expressed support for an energy ceasefire with Russia announced by US President Donald Trump, saying Kyiv is committed to efforts aimed at ending the war and protecting lives.

Zelenskyy made this known in a social media post on Sunday, adding that he was awaiting further details from Washington on the proposed truce.

“Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war and guarantee lasting peace,” he wrote.

The Ukrainian leader said he had discussed the ceasefire with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

“Ukraine supports the ceasefire,” Zelenskyy said. “And it is important that Russia support it as well.”

Trump announced the ceasefire on his Truth Social platform on Sunday morning, claiming it had taken immediate effect and that both countries had agreed to it.

However, he provided few details, while the White House had yet to issue further clarification.

“Do not break it!” Trump wrote.

In an interview with ABC’s This Week, which aired on Sunday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared to stop attacking Russian oil refineries if Moscow halted strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

He also urged Trump to pressure the Kremlin to accept the proposal.

The development comes amid renewed tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy.

On Saturday, the US president said Ukraine needed a new leader and blamed the Ukrainian president for rising diesel prices.

Responding to Trump’s comments, Zelenskyy said Ukraine could organise elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire.

Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia launched its invasion in 2022, and its constitution prohibits elections while the measure remains in force.

“Give us two months, 60 days off,” Zelenskyy said, adding, “with all respect to President Trump, it’s up to our society, up to our people to choose one or another leader.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine continued its attacks on Russian infrastructure, with a drone strike on Sunday shutting down a data centre operated by technology company Yandex.

The incident was the third reported attack on the company’s facilities in four days.

A Russian news outlet reported that the strike disrupted Yandex services in dozens of Russian cities and affected operations in Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia.

The company said its operations had been “completely halted”, although no injuries were reported.

A previous drone attack struck a Yandex data centre in the Ryazan region on Thursday, followed by another strike on its major facility in the Kaluga region on Friday.

Yandex, often described as Russia’s equivalent of Google, operates the country’s leading search engine and plays a significant role in its artificial intelligence sector.

Separately, Zelenskyy said search and rescue operations had ended in Zaporizhzhia following a Russian bombing on Saturday.

Authorities reported that 23 people, including four children, were killed, while more than 30 others sustained injuries.
