UK coroner rules Nigerian caregiver died by suicide

A coroner’s court in the United Kingdom has concluded that a 27-year-old Nigerian woman, Beatrice Solomon, died by suicide following a prolonged struggle with mental health issues linked to personal challenges.

Beatrice, who moved from Nigeria to the UK on a skilled worker visa in November 2023, was found unconscious at her residence on Norris Road, Stanfield.

According to The Stoke Sentinel, the inquest heard that her husband, Damian Butler, left their home at about 4:30 p.m. for his delivery job. He returned roughly two hours later to use the bathroom, where he found Beatrice unresponsive.

Police Constable Hinchliffe told the court that emergency services arrived shortly after the discovery, but Beatrice was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:21 p.m.

Investigators found no evidence of third-party involvement in her death.

During the hearing, Butler said his wife had experienced mental health difficulties over the previous year, which he linked to ongoing issues involving Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

He also revealed that he later learned Beatrice had made two previous attempts to end her life.

A post-mortem examination carried out by pathologist Dr Jones determined that she died from oxygen deprivation.

Delivering her verdict, Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor ruled that Beatrice’s death was a suicide.

“It is clear to me that Beatrice had researched and planned how to take her own life. I can only extend my sincere condolences to Beatrice’s family and friends,” the coroner said.

Beatrice worked as a caregiver in the UK. She is survived by her husband, their son and her siblings.
