UCL: Yamal’s late penalty earns Barcelona draw against Newcastle

Lamine Yamal rescued FC Barcelona at the death as the Spanish giants snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against Newcastle United, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg and slightly tilting the balance toward the Catalan side.

The young Spain international kept his composure deep into stoppage time, converting a penalty in the sixth minute of added time to cancel out Harvey Barnes’ late opener and deny the hosts a famous victory.

Newcastle had looked set for a priceless win after Barnes struck in the 86th minute, finishing from close range following a delivery by substitute Jacob Murphy that sparked wild celebrations among the home fans.

But the drama was not over. Moments before the final whistle, substitute Dani Olmo went down under a challenge from defender Malick Thiaw inside the penalty area.

Referee Marco Guida pointed straight to the spot, and Yamal calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to shatter Newcastle hearts.

Despite the late setback, the Magpies produced an impressive display that troubled the five-time European champions for much of the night.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick admitted his side struggled in possession but praised their defensive effort.

“We didn’t play well with the ball and made too many easy mistakes,” Flick said. “That’s exactly what Newcastle wants because their transitions are quick and dangerous. But I’m happy with how we defended together.”

Newcastle could also reflect on several chances that might have changed the outcome.

Will Osula nearly gave the hosts an early lead but was denied by a last-ditch block from Gerard Martín after being played through by Lewis Hall.

Barcelona gradually grew into the contest as Raphinha and Yamal threatened from wide areas while Pedri controlled the tempo in midfield. Ramsdale later tipped Yamal’s powerful effort wide as the visitors pushed forward.

At the other end, Barnes struck the woodwork before finally breaking the deadlock late on, only for Barcelona to respond dramatically moments later.

The draw leaves everything to play for in the return leg in Spain, where Barcelona will aim to finish the job in front of their home supporters.

Historically, Newcastle fans will remember their famous 3-2 victory over Barcelona in 1997 when Faustino Asprilla scored a legendary hat-trick, a night that remains etched in the club’s European folklore.
